What Stargirl can teach us about Spiritual Warfare

Last season of the DC show Stargirl, featured the young heroes going up against a demonic entity known as Eclipso, who gains power from a black diamond and influences people toward evil and dark desires. For the Christian viewer there are a lot of spiritual parallels. In one episode, Yolanda goes to a priest and asks if the Devil is real. Eclipso is a character who drains the souls from people and makes them see either want they want (or think they want) or their fears, which is how Satan works in the life of the Christian .

During Beth’s fight with Eclipso, she realizes that they only way she can successfully see through Eclipso’s delusions is by wearing Dr. Midnight’s goggles. She comes to the point where she never takes them off. In the same way, the Christian must be prepared with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and view everything we see, hear, think, and feel through the lens of the scriptures, which informs our Christian worldview. This way, we can easily discern truth from deception. Some things may feel pleasurable, or some ideas may sound right, but we can’t truly know unless we compare them to the standard of truth that God has given us, His Word, the Bible. Too often I forget to put my goggles on and fall victim to the wiles of the enemy. Just as Beth was convinced what she was seeing was real, so too does Satan make temptation seem to be the solution to our problems, rather than what it actually is: the way that leads to death.

"For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace." Romans 8:6
